Are you reading this page from a CD ?

Updated 1500 Thursday 26th July 2001

Robin CDROM Hello ! I'm Robin Lovelock, author of GPSS, the GPS Software, and the www.gpss.co.uk website. Maybe you are reading this from a CD ? If so, and the date above is very old, maybe you should visit www.gpss.co.uk on the Internet, for the very latest information of what you can see on this CD COPY of www.gpss.co.uk. If you got the CD with a Thuraya satellite 'phone, please visit the THURAYA page. The website and this CD hold mapping for over 140 countries. For the USA this includes street level detail over all the USA, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. For more detail on this USA mapping, visit the TIGER Page. If you have a business interest in GPS, please visit the IFYOUARE a business page.

You should have:

- or a Car-PC which combines all these.

I suggest you start by running GPSS without the GPS connected, so GPSS will give a demonstration. This should give you a good idea of what the software is capable of doing.

Then plug in your GPS - and GPSS should "spring into life" :-)

If your Laptop PC has a CD drive, then you can be testing GPSS "on the road" very quickly - within minutes - so please take GREAT CARE.

Safety and GPSS

Not Safe ! PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU USE THE COMPUTER IN YOUR CAR. LOCATE THE COMPUTER WHERE THE DRIVER WILL NOT BE TEMPTED TO LOOK AT THE DISPLAY OR TOUCH THE KEYBOARD. ENSURE THE COMPUTER CANNOT MOVE.
USE A SAFETY BELT.

Safer The above rules are particularly important when the driver is alone in the car. GPSS has been designed to provide voice guidance to the driver, to let him keep his eyes on the road. The display is intended for use indoors, by passengers, and the driver - when safely parked.

Robin Lovelock, Sunninghill Systems, and those that have supplied you with this hardware and software, cannot accept any liability for accidents, or any other problems like getting lost, resulting from use of this software.

Please DRIVE CAREFULLY.

Got the message ? :-)

Running GPSS off the CD

If your Laptop PC has a CD drive, you will probably start by simply following the instructions printed on the CD and run one of the copies of GPSS straight off the CD.
e.g. Click on Windows START button, then RUN d:\gpss0\gpss.exe
- assuming your CDROM is drive d:

You may choose to do this from your desktop PC.

If GPSS does not detect a GPS receiver, it will give an in-car demonstration - so you can check that the software is running OK. i.e. speaking, displaying maps, etc.

Moving GPSS onto the Laptop PC

The next important step will be to move GPSS onto the hard disk of your Laptop PC.

This could be done in one of several ways:

Testing with the GPS connected

Your GPS should normally have a 9 pin D-type connector to plug into the matching COM1 socket at the back of your Laptop PC.
If not, you may need to read "Problems" below.

If you run GPSS with the GPS connected and working, instead of giving a demonstration, GPSS should respond to the incoming GPS data, and show you at the correct position - at least on a World map, if nothing more detailed has yet been added.

GPSS.TXT and Online Help

Clicking on the GPSS icon in the low right corner, or hitting the ? key, will display some on-line help from the text file GPSS.TXT. This provides a brief summary of the most basic GPSS facilities, including a list of keyboard key functions.

Problems ?

Most GPS receivers supplied with the GPSS CDROM will have standard NMEA interfaces, and so no special setup will be required. However, the following may help you solve problems with non-standard GPS receivers, or hand-held products where the NMEA output must be switched on, using the buttons on the GPS itself.

Tips on Testing "On the Desk"

Some tests can obviously be done "on the road", but please get someone else to drive, while you look at the screen.

For those who want to test "on the desk", here are a few tips:

Note that to find places, you will need to add the mapping for these regions of the World. You can either do this by adding mapping from the relevant DOWNLOAD Page, or by using the GPSS SETUP Wizard on the CD.
